Recommerce ©, the leading expert in the refurbishment industry, has published the second edition of its European Trade-in Index, ranking the most commonly traded-in smartphones and highlighting the developments in this emerging yet essential market. The aim is to support consumer purchasing power and foster a local refurbishment market.
In an economic environment marked by inflation and the scarcity of raw materials, the trade-in and refurbishment of used consumer electronics are becoming a key alternative solution, both for consumers and the environment.
Today, reselling an old smartphone brings in an average of €170. This new average price marks an increase compared to 2023 (+10%), demonstrating the dynamic growth of the trade-in market. According to a recent study conducted by McKinsey for Recommerce, the European trade-in market could double by 2029.

*Ranking compared to 2023
The 2025 edition confirms the key dynamics of the market : more and more products are being taken back at a stable growing value. The demand is focused on high runners such as iPhone 11 and 12, which are also the most resold models as refurbished (according to the Re Index by Recommerce © in 2024). These figures show the value and consumer interest in older models, even launched years ago. Samsung models lose a few points in the Top 10, leaving plenty of room for improvement given their resale potential.
Reselling other used consumer electronics can also support consumers' purchasing power : Products such as tablets, game consoles or laptops also have a high potential for trade-in with an important residual value. Today, reselling a game console can earn 188€ on average, ie +25% compared to the 2023 edition. For tablets, 180€ are given back to the consumer on average, and 350€ for laptops.
Our Index shows the dynamics of the trade-in market and confirms a new trend : reselling your old device (smartphone, tablet, game console…) has become a concrete and profitable habit in an increasingly strained market. Beyond the issue of purchasing power, boosting the EU trade-in market is key to ensure European refurbishment sector resilience, reducing any dependence on foreign markets. It’s a virtuous cycle : local trade-in schemes fuel a local refurbishment market, creating more local jobs and value.
At Recommerce, our mission is to democratize trade-in in every product category, especially with our innovative platform, CircularX, enabling the creation of second life offers across any category for many players already (Boulanger, ShowroomPrivé, Christofle, Ebay, etc.).
Our latest innovations, such as our ‘Forward Trade-In’ solution, allowing consumers to know the future trade-in value of their device at the time of purchase, are participating in the development of a European and multi product trade-in market”, says Augustin Becquet, CEO of Recommerce.
